Gerry Laverty / Folksinger - Songwriter
Introduction
Influenced by the Great Folk Scare of Greenwich Village in the 1960's, Gerry Laverty was fortunate to receive early encouragement from fabled Columbia Records producer , Mr. John Hammond who described several of Laverty's early efforts as " quite moving." He has won awards from both Songwriters of Washington ( SAW) and VOCAL ( Va. Organization of Composers and Lyricists) incudling first place for his song Paris ( A Dream) in 1994. In addition to his solo efforts, he has appeared on several compilations, Richmond Local 641 and The Floating Folk Festival, Volumes 1 & 2. He received an award for Recording Artist Of The Year from VOCAL for 2006.
He has opened for Pure Prarie League and Peter Case ( @ The Gravity Lounge - Charlottesville).
His first solo release was Zion Crossroads in 1999. His latest recording is Songs For The New Dark Ages . His songs evoke spiritual images, the lone wanderer and rail against social injustice.
